Third Class of First-Gen Owls Join the Flock

This year, 15 new first-generation students became Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars. The class of 2023 is an eclectic group of students filled with academic promise and bright futures. Comprised of fifteen students, Cohort Three will matriculate in a wide range of concentrations, including healthcare, technology, science, business, education and more.

Their backgrounds are as diverse as their interests. Cohort Three students come to FAU from 13 cities across Florida. In addition to being first-generation college students, many are first-generation Americans, with family in countries as close as El Salvador and Jamaica to as far away as Bangladesh and India.

Including this year’s cohort, the Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars Program now includes 37 talented scholars. The program is dedicated to helping each student develop valuable strategies, build confidence, embrace their first-generation identity, connect to peer and professional mentors, and access campus resources to prepare them for a successful college career and post-graduate life.
